What is wrong with the kids of today? Social media and other forms of technology have taken over. My child has lost all knowledge of how to verbally communicate. They walk around with these head phones on, blocking out the rest of the world. Their communication skills are tremendously suffering!!!! My fourteen year old is guilty of all of these things. It just absolutely infuriates me. Self expression is being lost. We need to ration out the amount of technological products that we allow our kids to come in contact with.

Great Job
I have thoroughly enjoy being apart of this class. I am glad that I was able to take an African American Lit class. Though I am African American, or black, there are still aspect of history that I did not know about and this class brought them to light. I love how discussion was encouraged alot and we were free to voice our opinions and thoughts as we wished. We definitely had the right professor teaching this particular class. You new students, as well as your new school will be lucky to have you on their campus.

Color
I just had to share this little incident with you guys. My cousin, his wife and their baby were at the mall last week. An older caucasian female stopped and commented on how cute the baby was. After noticing that both my cousin and his wife were darker in complexion than their child, the lady proceeded to ask if the baby has reached her “full color potential?” I find that kind of offensive. My cousin just shook his head and said yes. African Americans come in all different shades. Still today the issue of color still exists in the minds of blacks and apparently in the minds of whites. I truly feel like that commented was way out of line and insensitive. Some people will never learn.

The Spring Cricket….
I really enjoyed listening to Rita Dove’s reading. As I finished listening I looked up the true definition of negritude. It is defined as the historical, cultural and social heritage considered common to blacks collectively. This is the first time, that i can remember of ever hearing this term. While i listened to the poem i immediately imagine a group of black people in a jar (society) trying to climb out into the world in order to succeed in life. Everyone around appears to be happy that you are advancing and making something of your life. But, the minute you fail at a certain task and fall back into the jar with them, they are secretly happy. I have often heard this many times as I was growing up. I;m sure this may also happen in other culture, but i can only speak from an African American aspect. I have truly witnessed this firsthand. It is sad that a race shoud exhibit such jealousy towards their own people. some feel like if one of them advances then they will turn their back on the black community and become “uppity.” Sometimes this may be true, but it is not always the case.

Thoughts
I have thoroughly enjoyed our discussions so far. The issue of race is something that is still very much present in today’s time also. I have been placed in many situations where i was made to feel inferior due to my rac, but i had to rise above the situation and be the bigger person. I identify more with Dubois, though i dont disagree with the ideas of Washington.
